Week 3 Day 3 - 28/09/23

JFFA DAY 1 (ONE DAY WORKSHOP)

Today was our taste of the Jewellery, Footwear and Fashion Accessories pathway and I was initially excited as I wanted to find out more about this pathway. We only had one day and the brief was to make a headpiece or footwear based on a comfort or confronting a discomfort and the restraint was that we could only use cardboard. This made the workshop very difficult for me practically. I like working directly on the body but it was hard to realise my idea with a material that was not malleable. It would have been easier to do with plastic or clay or even white card so if I could redo my outcome, these are the kinds of materials I would use. By completing this workshop, I realise that I enjoy fashion jewellery as the variety of ways one goes about making jewellery. I also have been made aware of how broad JFFA is as a specialism. I’m not particularly gifted in footwear design however I do like the practicality of this specialism, and I am intrigued by the possibility of learning traditional and contemporary techniques. This being said at the moment I would be more likely to choose the Fashion Design and Textiles pathway and integrate traditional and contemporary jewellery making techniques into my work. I also found the Fashion Design and Textiles workshop more fitting to my skills and interests - simply put I had more fun on Week 3 day 1 & 2. 

What are your thoughts on the Jewellery, Footwear & Fashion Accessories pathway. Has it changed your preconceptions of these disciplines? 

JFFA is a pathway I am very interested in and today’s very quick and brief workshop highlighted how it differed from the Fashion Design & Textiles pathway. I like how broad fashion jewellery is although I am less interested in the footwear aspect of JFFA.  I thought this would be an overly conceptual pathway however I am glad to know that you are taught traditional and contemporary skills. 

Are you a maker?

I would most definitely say I am a maker. I enjoy model making and practical experimenting more than drawing however working with cardboard today made me realise some of the limitations of my current ability to make things. I am used to working with fabric so today was very different to what I am used to thus my outcome did not look the most professional or neat but I had fun doing it and it was very empowering to see an idea I had in my head and sketched very rubbishy come to life in 3D. I am very proud of they way i worked today as I do not have much technical, jewellery and accessory making skills. 

Do materials excite me?

Yes and I would love to work with a variety of them. Cardboard was an exciting challenge but proved very difficult to use when model making. I may have been better off using paper or card. In today presentation I was introduced to how materials like leather, acetate, silver have been used in JFFA and I was excited by potentially being able to use these on this pathway. 

Did you enjoy working on the body?

YES, YES, YES. This is my favourite way of working. I find it the most fulfilling even though I am less skilled in 3D than I am in 2D. I tried to use my own body proportion to construct my head piece and continually tried it on to see what it would look like at the end. I think this is why I am thinking of choosing either the JFFA or the Fashion Design & Textiles Pathway.
